I am just a person with too much time, who happens to like anime, rock music, video games and learning about the past.  I will post things I happen to like here.

My Top 50 Anime Series

These are my top 50 anime series.  My general tastes are big adventures with different kind of characters and some action, space adventures, stories with conspirancies and mysteries, series in very atmospheric settings and slice of life.  Every time I watch anime I look for captivating stories that go somewhere and characters that are developed.

Note that my list does not rank movies and 6 episodes or less OVA's individually.  Also, where not indicated, I bunched together the franchises with multiple seasons and/or movies (like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) into a single set.  My first 20 series are my most loved ones.  I include a brief explanation of why I love these series so much.  Series 21 through 50 are very special to me but are not great enough to be in my top 20.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Picture
This series has a deep and engrossing story and engaging characters.  Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood starts with a single quest but seamesly progresses into a great conflict.  What makes this series number one for me is that it is also filled with universal themes like war, peace, discrimination, ambition, redemption, friendship and family.

2. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Picture
This series is very much constructed like my number one series.  Some differences between the two series are that Code Geass has a faster pace, it is more action oriented and emotions run very high.  At the end, this series is number two because the themes in the series with the top honor feel more endearing.

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Picture
For a long time I considered Evangelion the greatest anime ever made.  It has one of the most original (if not the most) stories and settings.  I am also amazed by how heart felt the experiences of the characters feel.  This series is now number three, not because it is not great, but, because two other series are just more capivating to me.

4. Space Battleship Yamato

Picture
Space Battleship Yamato is the oldest series in my top 20.  The reason why I love it so much is because it tells an adventure that can only be lived by gutsy characters.  For me the greatest achievement of this series is that it puts the characters in situations where normal humans would succumb to despair.  Not many series can create such feeling.

5. Gungrave

Picture
Gungrave is the best mafia/gangster story I have ever seen.  Usually, I am not a fan of stories dealing with crime syndicates, but this anime masterfully develops a heart felt story and great, endearing characters.  This series is a typical case of "don't judge a book by its cover" because it starts in a strange way but ends up being a deep and emotional story.

6. Revolutionary Girl Utena

Picture

Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of most original series I have ever seen.  It has a very peculiar and effective animation style that perfectly sets the atmosphere and mood of the story.  Ultimately, Utena is an amazing series because it has different kinds of characters that capture the angst about been young and inexperienced in life.

7. Trigun

Picture
I love how fun Trigun is when it starts.  It has a Western setting and not so smart characters.  As a comedy this series would have been great, but things change in the second half.  Trigun blew me away because what I thought was a silly story, ended up being a different and fascinating tale.

8. Cowboy Bebop

Picture
This great series is at this spot because I feel that the story needs to be more streamlined.  Do not give me wrong, Cowboy Bebop is one of the most original series ever created.  Sunrise shows how to make a quality series with superb animation and great music.

9. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

Picture
I love the concept of Gundam, and the Universal Century Timelines is one of the most engrossing and fascinating pieces of science fiction.  Gundam Zeta is my favorite series out of all the great content that has been created based on the original Gundam series.  I am also fascinated by how war is much more complex than simply bad guys versus bad guys.

10. Blood+

Picture
Vampires seem to be a favorite topic when creating pieces of fiction.  In the case of Blood+ the creators take a different approach that moves the story to several places around the world.  This series has a long and well developed story with all kinds of interesting characers.  Despite having weak animation, Blood+ is one my highest rated series.

11. Great Teacher Onizuka

Picture
I realize that G.T.O is not the greatest looking and written series out there, but something in it caught me.  I started watching this series from a perverted angle, but I soon discovered that it has valuable lessons.  For me Great Teacher Onizuka is a comedy, foremost, that has a lot of depth.

12. Samurai Champloo

Picture
I have read that Samurai Champloo is the spiritual successor of Cowboy Bebop.  Personally, I do not find many similarities.  Samurai Champloo has several self contained episodes, but all of them contribute to somehow string a nice story together.  Perhaps, I wish Cowboy Bebop would have been better organized (episode order-wise) as Samurai Champloo is.

13. Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

Picture

Gundam 0083 has what makes Gundam great, amazing looking animation, backstabbing, intense action, awesoome music and a healthy dose of romance.  When I watch this series I simply get excited.  The story is not the greatest, but everything else in the series feels so organic and excellently made.

14. Kanon (2006)

Picture
Kanon is an anime that makes me feel good.  The first time I saw this series, it was refreshing to see an anime that did not rely on big action and epic stories.  I enjoyed a lot getting to know the characters in Kanon, and the setting only adds to the melancholy with a sense of hope atmosphere.  Kanon is a little, special, cozy story.

15. Noir

Picture
I never knew stories about secret organizations and guns could be this cool before watching Noir.  I really feel that I learned something about European places and costumes by watching two of the coolest females in anime.  I also love that the animation quality and music in Noir are great.

16. Brigadoon

Picture
This is a very underrated series in my opinion.  As a big fun of emotional series, Brigadoon is right up my alley.  For me this series is about true friendship and love.  The characters go through some harsh experiences but at the end of the day, their frienship and love for each other keep them afloat.

17. Darker Than Black

Picture
The beginning of Darker Than Black is very mysterious and confusing, but the viewer gets almost immediately attached to the characters.  Just as thing began to be clear, season one ends.  The second season throws the main characters into different and, again, mysterious circumstances.  I wish for a third and final season that clarifies and ties all the loose ends.

18. Kurokami: The Animation

Picture
I do not like sad stories because seeing characters suffer (even if they are fictitious) because it is heart breaking.  Kurokami is a sad story, but it has one of my most beloved heroines, Kuro.  This series has a good but not great story.  But anyone who watches it will fall in love with Kuro and root for her.

19. Bakemonogatari

Picture

Continuing with great female characters, Hitagi Senjōgahara is the girlfriend everyone wants to have.  I did not know what Tsundere was, but Senjōgahara changed it.  Besides her, Bakemonogatari is a very creative and mysterious series that brilliantly makes the viewer construe their own interpretations of what exactly is going on.

20. Turn A Gundam

Picture
This is an unusual Gundam series.  Instead of having big mecha fights in space and Earth, this is a series about peace and how to maintain it.  This is a slow paced series with appealing characters.  It is one of my favorites because it bring a more philosophical and human aspect to the Gundam franchise.  To top it all, this series has great production values.
