The mystery of Juumonji (the theft at the festival) was finally solved by Houtarou. The culprit was Jirou Tanabe, president of the student general council. He is jealous of Muneyoshi Kugayama, the Student Council President and one of the creators of "A Corpse by Evening". Tanabe was fustrated that Kugayama was more talented than him at making manga, even though, Kugayama worked on "A Corpse by Evening" as a hobby but did an outstanding job. Juumonji was started to send a message to Kugayama
This incident also involved Mayaka. The club mate that had bothered Mayaka, Ayako Kouchi, was bothered because the more talented but less committed, Haruna Anjou, worked on the famed "A Corpse by Evening" manga. Kouchi begrudged Anjou for her innate talent. Coincidentally, Satoshi feels similar toward Houtarou because the latter is very talented despite his apathetic attitude. At the end of the episode, the members of the Classics Club seemed at peace.
Episode 17 of Hyouka was satisfactory but bitter. It is great that the Juumonji mystery was finally solved. The creators did a great job connecting several characters to the mystery. My dear Mayaka continued to be frustrated but appears to finally have made a move on Satoshi. I was kind of surprised that Houtarou blackmailed Tanabe into selling Hyouka anthologies online in exchange of not divulging the information on Juumonji. I wonder if he did it exclusively to make Chitanda happy. With four episodes to go, I hope the rest of the series is spent in a proper conclusion. This episode gets a 10 out of 10.
